VU Grading Scheme
Understand how Virtual University of Pakistan evaluates student performance — from grade points and GPA to CGPA calculation.
Official VU Grade Points
Virtual University uses a 10-point grading scale from A+ to F. Each grade carries specific grade points used in GPA and CGPA calculations.
| Grade | Marks Range (%) | Grade Points | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 85–100 | 4.00 | Excellent |
| A | 80–84 | 3.70 | Excellent |
| B+ | 75–79 | 3.30 | Good |
| B | 70–74 | 3.00 | Good |
| C+ | 65–69 | 2.50 | Satisfactory |
| C | 60–64 | 2.00 | Satisfactory |
| C- | 55–59 | 1.50 | Pass |
| D | 50–54 | 1.00 | Pass |
| F | 0–49 | 0.00 | Fail |
Note: A grade of "D" (1.00 GP) is the minimum passing grade. "F" (0.00 GP) is a failing grade and the course must be repeated.
How GPA & CGPA Are Calculated
Learn the formulas and step-by-step process VU uses to compute your semester GPA and overall CGPA.
GPA / CGPA Calculation
Semester GPA Formula
CGPA Formula
Step-by-Step Example
Multiply the grade points of each course by its credit hours.
e.g., A (3.70) in CS201 (3 cr) → 3.70 × 3 = 11.10 quality points
Sum all quality points for the semester.
Total quality points = 11.10 + 9.90 + 6.00 + ...
Divide total quality points by total credit hours.
Semester GPA = 33.00 ÷ 12 = 2.75
Tips to Improve Your CGPA
Practical strategies to help you maintain a strong academic record at Virtual University.
Know the Passing Criteria
A grade of 'D' (50%) or above is required to pass a course. However, to earn a degree, maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.00.
Focus on Credit Hours
Courses with higher credit hours have a greater impact on your CGPA. Prioritize performing well in 3 and 4 credit-hour courses.
Repeating Courses
If you fail a course, you can repeat it. The new grade replaces the old one in CGPA calculation, helping you improve your overall standing.
Maintain Consistency
A semester with average grades can lower your CGPA significantly. Aim for consistent performance across all semesters rather than occasional peaks.
Use the GPA Calculator
Before each semester, plan your target grades. Use VirtualU's GPA calculator to estimate your semester GPA and its effect on your CGPA.
Watch Your 'W' Grade
Withdrawing from a course (grade 'W') does not affect GPA, but too many withdrawals can raise concerns about academic commitment.
